Here’s A Sign To Try Something New
By Niniola Takuro
Our environment is consistently changing, prices of goods and services are going up and technology is on the rise. In fact, every month, something new happens in our country that changes our perspective or situation, whether for the better or worse. If our economy can consistently change, what is stopping us from doing the same?
Many of us tend to make excuses before even making an effort. Undoubtedly, the uncertainty of how new experiences will turn out can be terrifying. As a result, we often opt to stick with what is familiar and comfortable, instead of taking risks and exploring new possibilities. Don’t get it twisted, there’s nothing wrong with having a routine or a set path, but the real issue arises when we become resistant to trying out other opportunities.
“I don’t have time”,
“I’m too old”,
“Should I be doing this?”
“It is not for me”.
These are the statements we say to make ourselves feel better about not trying at all. Nevertheless, standing up to fears and taking that bold step beyond our comfort zones can be highly beneficial for personal growth. Taking such leaps allows us to broaden our horizons and gain valuable insights, not only about the new experiences themselves but also about our own capabilities and potential.
Reshma Saujani’s inspiring journey serves as a prime example of the rewards that come from trying different paths. She began her career in law, transitioned to finance, and then took a courageous leap to run for Congress, even though she ultimately lost. Through this experience, she discovered a new purpose – bridging the gender gap in computer science. Reshma founded Girls Who Code, a non-profit organization focused on empowering women in tech. Like Reshma, all you need is determination and a willingness to push past the negativity and actually try.
One of the biggest benefits of trying new things is beating the power of fear over our lives and expanding our sense of accomplishment. You’d never know the actual outcome of something if you do not try it out first.
For you, it may not be career-related, it can be learning a new hobby, making a change to your current routine, doing an activity you’ve always wanted to try or even applying for a competition. The possibilities are absolutely endless when it comes to trying something new, and whether it’s a big or small leap outside your comfort zone you’ll still reap the benefits as long as you are willing to try.
Embracing change and stepping outside our comfort zones can lead us to discover our true passions and unlock our full potential. So, forget about the reasons why you shouldn’t do these new things because there are always reasons to not do something. Be brave and take that first step.
