Even for the experienced, today’s job market is fraught with uncertainty amidst navigating new work tools, advanced technologies, and rapidly changing markets that require even more rapidly changing skills. So how does a new entrant gain access to good jobs in a seemingly daunting market?

 

Preparing yourself for the job

Your number one goal is to make yourself competitive and attractive to potential employers, and there are several ways to accomplish this goal. Whereas you may think that your job search begins upon graduation, it does not. It began a long time before then. It started with on time attendance to class or how else do we gauge your claim to being able to work unsupervised. To adequately prepare yourself for the job market, consider the under listed:

1. Internships: Internships are a great way to prepare for and gain work experience. They offer the opportunity to practice theoretical knowledge and gain new skills. They also allow you to test the waters with your chosen career or provide exposure to a new one.

2. Volunteering: Volunteering is akin to internships in that they allow you gain skills and network. Volunteering is one way to actually experience the sector or organisation you want to work with. Volunteering also allows you gain a sense of purpose when you do not have a full-time job.

3. Skill Assessment and update: This is an important self-assessment process. You must have the requisite skills for whatever job you plan to do. It is important that you conduct some research, assess yourself for the skills you have an ensure you close the gaps through learning and development.

4. Prepare your CV: Your CV is your marketing tool. It gives your potential employer an overview of your skills, strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Do bear in mind that your CV is a dynamic document, and you should tailor your experience to suit the role you’re seeking.

The Search – Skill, Experience and CV ready

Now that you’re ready for the job market, how do you find the job of your dreams? Firstly, clarify your career goals and interests and search for industries/companies/roles that align with your values. The good news is that today’s job market is global, providing limitless possibilities. In no particular order:

1. Leverage social media by optimising your profile, following companies and responding to job postings

2. Professional networking sites: Professional networking sites like LinkedIn are excellent for networking and applying for positions

3. Traditional media: Certain industries and companies are required to advertise vacancies on traditional media. In Nigeria, this is usually in some print media on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

4. Company website: Submit your CV and cover letter through career pages on company websites

5. Job sites that focus on remote roles: Register on and apply for suitable positions on job sites that offer remote roles to gain access to global jobs.

6. Networking: Build your network through conferences, professional events, job fairs and other networking opportunities

Remember that your CV is dynamic and should be adjusted to focus on key experiences for whatever company or sector you are applying to. When you do get asked to interview, preparation is also key to show competence, ask questions and be one step closer to the job.

 

Things to note

1. Rejection is likely, however, you should keep on with the search and not be deterred. If you find your job search taking longer than expected, volunteer or seek development opportunities to keep learning and refining your skills.

2. Be open to other industries apart from your core area. You are still in growth phase and exploring several interests will allow you get to know yourself better

3. Be open to continuous learning

4. Building strong work ethics such as integrity, teamwork and professionalism amongst others is essential to success in the workplace
