What’s the fitness buzz all about?

Fitness is a word that is thrown around a lot. Sometimes, it sounds like a new trend, but it isn’t. So what’s the fuss all about?
Fitness is about being able to move and execute daily tasks effortlessly. It’s not about the tight body or the ripped abs. Those are great perks but not the focus of fitness.
What’s the point of being fit if you can’t bend down to pick something off the floor with ease?
Fitness is all about movement and movement is what we were created to do. Modern life has however made it easy for us to move less, so there is the need to make an extra effort. Keeping fit is great for the obvious physical benefits but more importantly for mental health.
A fit person is typically healthier, happier, a better thinker, more reasonable and better balanced. Keeping fit at a young age is beneficial when old, see it as a youthful deposit towards aging well. Do you have adults around you who need to be helped when performing simple tasks like tying shoelaces? Do a quick research to understand how fit they are and you’ll most likely find out how unfit the person is.

Fitness is personal and should be approached that way. What works for you might not work for the next person.
How can you get fit?
Embrace exercises that you love doing. This way you will keep at it, thereby building consistency. However, don’t just stick to going to the gym to lift weights. Strength training is great, but you also need to include flexibility and mobility exercises, these will pay off big time. Oh, there’s cardio, most people think this is the basis of fitness. Cardio is great but it does not help you build muscle or get toned. A combination of strength training, cardio and flexibility/mobility is best.
Not a gym person?
Then work out at home, find a buddy, go walking/running/swimming. Remember that the focus is movement you love. That’s it.
Trying to lose weight?
Make sure you eat right. Get in all the food groups to boost your energy, keep you strong and all the good stuff your body needs. Eat to nourish, add fitness and you are good to go.
